California – August 2025: Google has rolled out two notable updates for Gmail users on Android, introducing a long-awaited “Mark as Read” shortcut along with the fresh Material 3 expressive design.
According to 9to5Google, the Material 3 update was initially tested in June but is now being integrated more widely into Gmail’s interface. The new design brings a cleaner search bar, separates inbox items into distinct containers, and introduces smoother swipe animations, giving the app a more modern and fluid look. As part of the redesign, the hamburger menu and profile switcher have also been removed from the browser version, streamlining navigation. However, this refreshed layout has not yet reached all users and will continue rolling out gradually.
Meanwhile, the “Mark as Read” option something Android users had been anticipating has officially become available across all devices with the latest Gmail update (version 2025.08.04.x). Previously released in phases since late June, the feature now appears directly in notifications between the Delete/Archive and Reply buttons. This small but practical addition is being welcomed as a time-saving tool, allowing users to manage emails more efficiently without fully opening the app.
With these upgrades, Google continues its effort to make Gmail faster, cleaner, and more user-friendly, reinforcing its position as the world’s leading email platform.
