KARACHI: In a significant development for urban mobility and public safety, Karachi has opened its first dedicated ambulance lane, aimed at ensuring faster access for emergency vehicles in one of the city’s most congested neighbourhoods.
The newly established corridor, located on Mansfield Street in Saddar, became operational after the district administration carried out a large-scale anti-encroachment drive. Deputy Commissioner South, Javed Nabi Khoso, said the removal of long-standing illegal structures finally made it possible to carve out a clear, uninterrupted route specifically for ambulances — a first-of-its-kind initiative in Karachi.
Khoso noted that the administration’s foremost responsibility is to guarantee that emergency vehicles can reach hospitals without delays. He said the creation of the ambulance lane reflects a wider plan to streamline traffic flow in areas where gridlock frequently endangers lives.
He added that the district will soon introduce similar routes on other major roads in South Karachi to reduce the time ambulances lose while navigating heavy congestion.
The move has drawn positive reactions from residents and healthcare workers, who say the dedicated lane is a long overdue measure that could significantly improve rescue operations in densely populated commercial zones.
