How Pakistan Joined One of the World’s Fastest Undersea Internet Networks

Pakistan has taken a significant leap in its digital evolution by officially becoming part of the SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable system—one of the fastest and most advanced undersea communication networks currently in operation.

The onboarding of this cable marks the country’s third international subsea link within a single year, a rapid expansion that sharply boosts Pakistan’s internet bandwidth and strengthens its presence in the global digital economy.

Federal IT and Telecom Minister Shaza Fatima announced the development on LinkedIn, calling it a major step toward deeper global connectivity and enhanced national network capacity. The arrival of SEA-ME-WE 6 follows closely after the deployment of the Africa-1 and 2Africa systems, marking one of the swiftest upgrades in Pakistan’s submarine infrastructure in recent years.

A Major Boost in Bandwidth

Transworld Associates (TWA), the landing partner for SEA-ME-WE 6, will initially provide an additional 4 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity. This marks a nearly 40% increase in the country’s overall bandwidth, raising it from 13.2 Tbps.

The 21,700-kilometre cable stretches from Singapore to France, linking Pakistan with key hubs across Asia and Europe. Its high-capacity design supports heavy data flows essential for global businesses, cloud platforms, AI services, and modern digital applications.

Strengthening Pakistan’s Digital Foundations

Alongside the new cable, TWA is building a Tier III-certified data centre in Karachi, expected to become operational in January 2026. The facility will be directly connected to major subsea systems including SMW-6, SMW-5, TW1, and 2Africa.

Designed for high-density AI workloads, the data centre will offer secure and scalable hosting for domestic and international enterprises. With Tier III certification, it ensures redundancy, high availability, and fault tolerance key components needed to support Pakistan’s expanding cloud infrastructure, enterprise networks, and digital content ecosystem.

Together, these developments signal Pakistan’s accelerating transition into a modern, globally connected digital hub.
