DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates has suspended the issuance of visit and work visas for nationals from nine countries, in a move that immigration officials describe as temporary.
The restriction applies to citizens of Uganda, Sudan, Somalia, Cameroon, Libya, Afghanistan, Yemen, Lebanon, and Bangladesh, effectively putting all new applications for tourist and employment permits on hold. Applications already in process have also been frozen until further notice.
While Emirati authorities have not issued a formal explanation, officials familiar with the matter suggest the decision is tied to security considerations and wider diplomatic concerns. They stressed, however, that the measure is not permanent and will be reviewed as circumstances evolve.
The UAE has occasionally adopted similar measures in the past, particularly during periods of regional instability. Analysts say such restrictions are usually short-lived and subject to regular reassessment, depending on security conditions and international relations.
For now, individuals from the affected countries are advised to refrain from submitting new applications until further guidance is provided. Immigration authorities are expected to release additional details once the review process concludes.
The development underscores the UAE’s cautious approach to balancing its status as a global business and travel hub with the need to safeguard national security and manage complex regional dynamics.
