Trump Revives Presidential Fitness Test in Push to “Make America Healthy Again”

WASHINGTON — August 1, 2025:
Bringing back a decades-old tradition aimed at improving youth health, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the reinstatement of the Presidential Fitness Test during a White House event on Thursday.

Addressing a crowd that included fitness advocates and former athletes, Trump declared that his administration is taking “practical steps” to encourage a healthier lifestyle across the country. As part of the initiative, physical fitness assessments will once again become mandatory in American schools.

“This is about making America strong, active, and healthy again,” Trump said. “The mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups — they’re all coming back. Our kids will benefit, and so will our nation.”

The President also announced the formal revival of the Presidential Council on Sports and Fitness, a body previously sidelined in recent years. He signed an executive order at the event to formalize the changes, flanked by high-profile athletes who praised the initiative.

Trump emphasized that the fitness test had been a celebrated tradition in American schools for generations, one that instilled discipline, perseverance, and physical well-being. “We’re bringing it back — stronger than ever,” he said.

Notably, the original Presidential Fitness Test was discontinued in 2012 during the Obama administration and replaced with a more modern, health-oriented assessment called FitnessGram. Trump’s latest move marks a return to a more performance-based system that measures strength, endurance, and agility.

While reactions from educators and parents remain mixed, the White House insists the move reflects growing concerns about childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles in the U.S.
