KARACHI — August 1, 2025:
In a significant development, the Sindh High Court has suspended the implementation of the provincial ombudsman’s ruling against K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi, offering temporary relief while the case continues to unfold.
The court issued notices to the involved parties and requested formal replies within a week. During Thursday’s hearing, Barrister Abid Zuberi — representing Moonis Alvi — argued that the case does not fall within the domain of the Provincial Ombudsman for Anti-Harassment, as K-Electric operates not only in Karachi but also in adjoining areas like Hub and Winder, classifying it as an inter-provincial organization governed by federal laws.
The court has also directed Alvi to deposit a fine of Rs 2.5 million, as previously ordered by the ombudsman, pending further proceedings.
The legal challenge comes in response to an earlier verdict by Justice (retd) Shah Nawaz Tariq, who heads the Provincial Ombudsman’s Office for Workplace Harassment. The ombudsman had ordered Moonis Alvi’s removal from his position following the alleged harassment of a female employee — a charge the office claimed had been substantiated after investigation.
Moonis Alvi swiftly moved to contest the decision in court, citing jurisdictional overreach and procedural concerns.
After an initial review, the Sindh High Court decided to temporarily halt the ombudsman’s decision and set the case for further hearing next week.
This case continues to draw public and media attention, particularly in light of increasing scrutiny on workplace harassment policies across both public and private institutions.
