Pakistan Navy Seizes Nearly $1 Billion Worth of Drugs in Major Arabian Sea Operation

In one of the largest anti-narcotics operations in recent years, Pakistan Navy Ship (PNS) Yarmook intercepted two dhows in the Arabian Sea, seizing narcotics worth nearly $972 million, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The operation, codenamed Al Masmak, was conducted under the Saudi-led Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, a component of the multinational Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).

According to naval officials, the two vessels were stopped during a 48-hour operation after they were found sailing without identification markings or active tracking systems. Subsequent investigations revealed that both dhows were stateless a common tactic used by smugglers operating in the high seas.

The first vessel, intercepted on October 18, was found carrying more than two tons of crystal methamphetamine (ICE), with an estimated street value of $822 million. Less than two days later, the second dhow was seized, yielding an additional 350 kilograms of ICE valued at $140 million, along with 50 kilograms of cocaine worth approximately $10 million.

The seized drugs were transferred to PNS Yarmook for on-board testing before being destroyed in accordance with international safety protocols.

Royal Saudi Naval Forces Commodore Fahad Aljoiad, Commander of CTF 150, hailed the operation as “one of the most successful narcotics seizures for CMF,” adding that it underscored the effectiveness of multinational cooperation in maintaining maritime security.

“The success of Operation Al Masmak reflects the professionalism and coordination of all naval forces involved,” Commodore Aljoiad said, emphasizing that the mission was a testament to the strong partnership among allied nations combating transnational crimes.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) also acknowledged the achievement in an official statement, commending CTF 150 and the Pakistan Navy for their pivotal role in curbing the flow of illicit narcotics through regional waters.

Launched on October 16, Operation Al Masmak represents a focused multinational effort to enhance security and surveillance across key maritime routes in the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Oman. The initiative brought together naval assets from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, France, Spain, and the United States, highlighting a shared commitment to countering drug smuggling and other illicit maritime activities.

Commissioned in Romania in 2020 and inducted into Pakistan’s naval fleet the same year, PNS Yarmook is a state-of-the-art multi-role combat ship equipped with modern electronic warfare and surveillance systems. The vessel has been part of multiple international security missions, reflecting Pakistan Navy’s expanding role in global maritime stability.

Naval analysts believe this operation not only showcases Pakistan’s growing operational capabilities but also reinforces its standing as a reliable partner in international efforts to secure vital sea lanes against organized crime and terrorism.
