Pakistan Mourns Tragic Death of German Mountaineer Laura Dahlmeier in Gilgit-Baltistan

Islamabad – July 31, 2025:
The Government of Pakistan has extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Germany, the family, and admirers of German mountaineer Laura Dahlmeier, who tragically lost her life in a mountaineering accident in the Gilgit-Baltistan region.

In an official statement issued on Wednesday, the Foreign Office of Pakistan expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the renowned athlete, calling her “a beacon of inspiration for sports enthusiasts across the globe.”

“Pakistan stands with the family, fans, and the German nation in this difficult time,” said the Foreign Office spokesperson. “Laura’s passion, strength, and dedication to the sport of mountaineering will forever be remembered and honored.”

According to initial reports, the tragic incident occurred on Laila Peak in the Hoshe Valley of Baltistan’s Ghanche district, where two German female climbers were attempting a summit. The Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesperson, Faizullah Faraq, confirmed that Laura Dahlmeier, an Olympic gold medalist and highly respected figure in the climbing community, was struck by falling rocks during the ascent.

She was initially reported missing after the accident. Despite immediate search and rescue efforts, she was later found and confirmed to have succumbed to her injuries. Her fellow climber, Kraus Marina, survived the incident and was rescued using ropes and other climbing equipment.

The mountaineering community, both in Pakistan and internationally, has expressed shock and grief over the loss. Tributes continue to pour in, celebrating Laura’s remarkable achievements and her love for high-altitude adventure.

Pakistan, home to some of the world’s most majestic peaks, including K2 and Nanga Parbat, regularly welcomes international climbers. However, the challenging terrains of the northern mountainous regions are known to carry risks, especially during the summer climbing season.

Authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan have assured full cooperation in the repatriation process and extended all necessary support to the German Embassy in Islamabad.
