Karachi – July 31, 2025:
In what is being described as yet another major daylight robbery in Karachi, unidentified armed men made off with Rs 9.7 million in cash after targeting a cash transit van in the Korangi area on Wednesday.
According to police sources, the incident occurred near Chamra Chowrangi in Korangi, where a private cash van transporting money from a local bank came under attack. The robbers reportedly ambushed the vehicle, opened indiscriminate fire when the security guards tried to resist, and fled with the cash.
At least two guards sustained gunshot wounds in the confrontation and were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Their condition remains stable, authorities said.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, SSP Korangi Tariq Nawaz confirmed that three to four armed suspects were involved in the robbery. “Initial findings suggest that the suspects were heavily armed and well-prepared. They fired shots at the guards when resistance was offered,” he said.
The SSP added that CCTV footage from surrounding areas, including the bank and adjacent businesses, is being collected to help identify the culprits. “We are actively reviewing surveillance material and tracking the possible escape routes used by the robbers,” he added.
The cash van, according to police, was on its way to the company’s head office after collecting money from a bank branch. During the suspects’ escape, a brief exchange of gunfire was also reported between them and personnel from Awami Colony Police, who attempted to intercept them.
This latest incident has once again raised concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi, particularly when it comes to the safety of businesses and financial institutions.
It’s worth noting that this robbery follows a series of high-profile crimes in the city. Earlier this month, a car dealer’s home in the PECHS area was looted, with the culprits reportedly escaping with Rs 130 million worth of cash and valuables. The case took a sensational turn after it was revealed that five siblings, including a well-known TikToker, were allegedly involved. However, investigators have yet to recover the stolen assets or the getaway vehicle.
In a separate case from March 2025, robbers disguised as police officers stormed a toll plaza on the National Highway Link Road during pre-dawn hours. Armed with automatic weapons, the gang of nine held the toll staff hostage and looted Rs 1 million in cash along with official weapons before fleeing the scene. That case was registered at the Steel Town Police Station, but arrests have remained elusive.
Authorities have vowed to tighten security protocols for cash-in-transit operations and to expedite investigations into this growing wave of armed robberies across Karachi.
