Pakistan Extends Karachi Port Access to Bangladesh to Strengthen Trade Ties

In a significant move aimed at boosting regional trade and connectivity, Pakistan has offered Bangladesh access to the Karachi Port, opening new avenues for commerce with China and Central Asian countries. The announcement came during the ninth meeting of the Pakistan-Bangladesh Joint Economic Commission (JEC) held in Dhaka the first such gathering in two decades signaling a renewed focus on economic and diplomatic cooperation between the two neighbors.

During the session, both countries agreed to deepen collaboration across several sectors, including trade, energy, information technology, education, health, and tourism. Officials highlighted that improving port access and trade routes could not only expand regional business opportunities but also strengthen people-to-people connections.

As part of efforts to promote education and skill development, Pakistan pledged 500 fully funded scholarships for Bangladeshi students. Additionally, technical training opportunities for Bangladeshi professionals will be expanded from 5 to 25 seats, enabling wider participation in specialized programs offered across Pakistan.

A key outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Pakistan Halal Authority (PHA) and the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI). This agreement seeks to improve cooperation in halal certification, quality control, and standardization, paving the way for smoother trade in food and consumer goods between the two nations.

Officials on both sides expressed optimism that these initiatives would not only enhance economic ties but also foster stronger political understanding and mutual growth in South Asia.
