New Hub Canal to Begin Operations in Karachi from August 14

Residents of Kemari and West districts in Karachi, who have faced chronic water shortages for years, are expected to see some relief as the new Hub Canal is set to go live on August 14. The move is part of an effort to improve the city’s struggling water supply.
As reported by Dawn, this new canal is a major provincial government project designed to upgrade Karachi’s water infrastructure. It will bring in an additional 100 million gallons per day (MGD). Meanwhile, the existing Hub Canal, which currently delivers 150 MGD, is also undergoing repairs.
The plan also includes boosting capacity at the Hub Pumping Station, rising mains, and the Hub Filter Plant—raising their output from 80 MGD to 100 MGD. Officials say the project marks a significant step toward solving the city’s water crisis and easing the burden on affected communities.
