Karachi Water Supply Restored After Pumping Station Power Outages

KARACHI — The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) announced on Sunday that power outages at the city’s water pumping stations have been resolved, and normal water services have been fully restored across Karachi.

The city had faced a severe water shortage in November due to prolonged electricity disruptions, which halted pumping operations and left residents struggling to access water. In a statement, KWSC officials said they worked closely with K-Electric throughout the crisis to bring the system back online.

“The citywide water supply has now returned to normal,” the statement read. “All possible steps are being taken to further strengthen the system for the future.”

According to KWSC, Karachi experienced a total deficit of 884 million gallons of water due to the outages. The Dhabeji Pumping Station was affected the most, facing 132 hours and 20 minutes of power interruption, resulting in a shortage of 424 million gallons. Dumlottee Wells experienced 146 hours of outages, causing a 111-million-gallon deficit. The North East Karachi Pumping Station recorded a shortfall of 335 million gallons, while smaller stations like Hub, Pipri, and Gharo saw comparatively minor shortages.

Officials warned that repeated cable faults had caused significant damage to pumping machinery and urged that stable power supply measures be implemented. Recommendations include installing alternative feeders, standby cables, and technical upgrades to safeguard critical pumping stations from future disruptions.
