CM Murad Sanctions Rs25bn for Karachi Roads, Orders Streetlights and Drainage Improvements

KARACHI — Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has approved Rs25 billion for the urgent reconstruction of 315 internal streets and 60 major roads across Karachi, while emphasizing the proper installation of streetlights throughout the city.

The announcement comes as commuters continue to face difficulties due to heavily damaged roads, worsened by recent rainfall. Speaking in a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, officials including Local Government Minister Nasir Shah, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, and other top administrators discussed accelerating the city’s development projects.

“After the recent heavy rains, Karachi’s roads are in a state of serious disrepair,” CM Murad said. “Ongoing mega projects are already causing traffic problems. I want all development work to move faster so that citizens are not further inconvenienced.”

Mayor Wahab highlighted that 315 internal streets urgently need reconstruction. CM Murad directed the concerned authorities to ensure these schemes are approved without delay and completed promptly. He also stressed that proper drainage systems must accompany all roadworks, including the 60 key highways targeted in this project.

The Chief Minister confirmed that Rs25 billion had been allocated for the city’s development, assuring that financial resources were not a constraint. “I want immediate and high-quality work for the people,” he said.

In addition, CM Murad congratulated the mayor on the recent inauguration of reverse-osmosis (RO) plants in Keamari, adding that clean water, safe roads, and law and order are essential for Karachi’s residents. He also noted that traffic accidents have decreased since the launch of the Sindh Safe City Project.

Mayor Wahab earlier requested Rs25 billion from the federal government to strengthen the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to ensure effective development across the megacity.
