Heavy Rains Paralyze Hyderabad, Educational Institutions Shut Down

Hyderabad: Torrential rains lashed Hyderabad and surrounding districts of Sindh on Monday, inundating low-lying areas and forcing authorities to shut down all educational institutions for the day.

According to the Meteorological Department, Hyderabad city received 58 millimeters of rainfall while 63 millimeters were recorded at the airport within the past 24 hours. The downpour left major areas submerged, including Qasimabad, Guddu Chowk Railway Underpass, Railway Station, Shahbaz Building, and the Commissioner House, with several key roads also under water.

The district administration confirmed that both government and private schools and colleges would remain closed in view of the worsening situation.

In Jamshoro and Kotri, several feet of water accumulated on main highways, disrupting traffic flow, while rainwater entered homes due to the failure of the drainage system. Citizens complained that local authorities were slow to respond, leaving many stranded.

Heavy showers also continued intermittently in Mirpurkhas, Matiari, Hala, and Tando Muhammad Khan. Following the situation, the Deputy Commissioners of Matiari and Tando Muhammad Khan announced a one-day closure of all educational institutions across their districts.

Officials of the local administration said efforts were being made to pump out rainwater, but admitted that conditions in low-lying neighborhoods remained “critical.”
