Cupertino, California — For the first time in five years, Apple has overhauled the design of its flagship iPhone, unveiling the iPhone 17 series alongside the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and AirPods Pro 3 at its launch event on Tuesday, September 9. The showcase, dubbed “Awe Dropping”, has been billed as one of the company’s most ambitious updates in recent memory.
This year’s iPhone lineup introduces four models: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the all-new iPhone 17 Air which replaces the Plus variant from previous generations. The Pro editions boast a larger redesigned camera module and Apple’s powerful new A19 Pro chip, while the standard iPhone 17 gains a 6.3-inch display with ProMotion technology for the first time.
The most striking addition, however, is the iPhone 17 Air. Measuring just 5.5mm thick, it is Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date. It features a single 48MP rear camera, supports only e-SIM, and carries a 2800 mAh battery optimized through iOS 26 enhancements to maximize endurance. Positioned between the base and Pro variants, the Air introduces a fresh pricing tier and will debut in a new range of colors, including a standout orange option for Pro models.
Alongside the iPhone, Apple refreshed its wearable lineup. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 arrives with a new design, a larger screen, the faster S11 chip, and 5G capability. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 11 retains its familiar look but offers a brighter display. The more affordable Apple Watch SE has been upgraded with a faster processor and improved screen, and is being positioned as a potential standalone device for children.
In the health tech space, Apple teased the arrival of a blood pressure detection tool, expected to launch next year as part of its Health Plus service.
The event also saw the introduction of the AirPods Pro 3, arriving three years after the previous version. The updated earbuds add a heart rate monitor, compact charging case, and real-time language translation a feature designed to work seamlessly with iOS 26 and iPods 26.
With sweeping hardware upgrades and bold new features, the iPhone 17 launch marks Apple’s biggest product refresh in half a decade, signaling its intent to redefine the user experience across devices.
