Karachi: The University of Karachi has taken a significant step towards reclaiming its occupied land, as the Syndicate held a special meeting at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi.
During the session, members unanimously approved measures to recover the university’s land from encroachment. It was agreed that all concerned institutions would be approached without delay to ensure the process is carried out with their cooperation.
To safeguard the institution’s property, the Syndicate decided to hire a reputed legal firm with proven expertise in handling encroachment cases and land recovery. A five-member committee has also been formed to provide the legal firm with all necessary documentation and details of the university’s land holdings. The committee comprises Dr. Muhammad Qaiser, Dr. Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, Dr. Saleha Rehman, Syed Jahanzeb, and Asif Mukhtar.
In addition, the meeting approved the deployment of dedicated security guards for round-the-clock monitoring of the university’s land. Officials described this gathering as the first special meeting of its kind in the university’s history, aimed solely at protecting every inch of its property.
Participants of the meeting lauded Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi for convening the session and taking concrete steps to protect the university’s land. Prof. Iraqi also praised the role of civil society and the media, noting that journalists in particular have played a vital role in highlighting land-grabbing issues and could continue to serve as a strong line of defense against encroachment mafias.
