Green Line BRT Phase 2 Set to Break Ground This Month in Karachi

KARACHI – August 6, 2025:
In a much-anticipated move to improve Karachi’s transit infrastructure, construction on Phase 2 of the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is expected to begin in the second week of August. The announcement marks a key milestone in the city’s journey toward modern, eco-friendly, and reliable public transport.

Coming nearly four years after the launch of the first phase — which runs from Surjani Town to Numaish — this new extension will cover a 1.8-kilometer stretch from Capri Cinema to Municipal Park, Saddar, one of the city’s busiest urban centers.

The route has been carefully selected to reduce traffic pressure in central Karachi, while offering faster and more comfortable commute options to daily travelers. According to city officials, three new bus stations will be constructed along the route, designed with a strong focus on passenger safety, accessibility, and modern amenities.

To maintain smooth flow and minimize traffic disruptions, two dedicated traffic signals will also be installed, allowing BRT buses to move efficiently through intersections, even during peak hours.

Construction tenders have already been awarded, and work is set to begin without further delay. With an additional Rs5 billion earmarked for this second phase, the total investment in the Green Line BRT now stands at Rs30 billion — a clear indicator of the government’s long-term vision for urban mobility.

Officials believe the project will significantly cut down travel times, reduce the burden on Karachi’s overstrained roads, and encourage a shift toward cleaner, collective commuting — aligning with broader goals of sustainable urban development.

Once completed, Phase 2 is expected to become a crucial link connecting commercial, administrative, and residential zones, reinforcing the Green Line as a backbone of the city’s public transport network.

For thousands of Karachiites, it’s not just another infrastructure project — it’s a promise of better travel, less stress, and more time saved each day.
