In a groundbreaking development for Pakistan’s livestock sector, Chinese company Royal Cell Biotechnology (Pakistan) Co. Ltd has started selling buffalo embryos produced using advanced Chinese IVF technology commercially within the country.
In partnership with the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, these embryos are now available in local markets at an affordable price of Rs 30,000 each. Dr. Qaisar Shahzad, Program Manager at Royal Cell Biotechnology (Pakistan), revealed that over 7,000 buffalo embryos are currently in ready stock, available for immediate purchase.
He further stated that using Chinese IVF technology, around 20 buffalo calves have already been born locally at Ibrahim Farm and HAS Farm in Pakistan. In addition, 10,000 embryos were exported to China in September, valued at approximately $2 million.
The Lahore-based RCB (Pakistan), owned by China’s Royal Group, has established a joint venture with Pakistan’s JW Group. This collaboration specializes in the production and transfer of embryos from Pakistan’s superior buffalo breeds, using cutting-edge Chinese IVF technology.
Following authorization in August 2023 to export buffalo embryos, ova, and frozen semen to China, RCB (Pakistan) shipped its first consignment of 5,000 embryos on June 8, 2024, followed by a second batch of another 5,000 embryos. The embryos are produced from oocytes collected at the Royal JW Buffalo Industry Co. Laboratory in Lahore, where the company is also actively preserving elite Pakistani buffalo breeds to enhance milk production and improve the quality and population of native livestock.
This initiative marks a major step forward in modernizing Pakistan’s livestock industry, combining advanced technology with local breeding programs to boost productivity and international trade potential.
