July 31, 2025 – A quiet revolution is brewing in the world of office software — and it’s being led by none other than OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The tool that once amazed users with conversational responses is now taking on one of the most recognizable programs in Microsoft’s arsenal: Excel.
For decades, Excel has been the gold standard for spreadsheets, embedded in nearly every clerical, administrative, and analytical job across the globe. Mastering its formulas and functions was often a rite of passage for entry-level workers. But in a sign of how fast the digital landscape is evolving, that foundational skill might soon become obsolete.
ChatGPT isn’t just assisting with Excel anymore — it’s starting to use it.
From Assistant to Operator
Initially, ChatGPT was a helpful guide — summarizing data, suggesting formulas, and making Excel a little less intimidating for newcomers. Users could type a question in plain English and get complex formulas like:
“If column A is greater than 100 and column B says ‘Yes’, mark it as Approve.”
And just like that, it would generate:
=IF(AND(A2>100,B2="Yes"),"Approve","Reject")
That capability alone was a game-changer. No more memorizing syntax or scouring Google for help. But that was only the beginning.
OpenAI’s latest advancements mean ChatGPT can now open spreadsheets, populate them with data, analyze trends, and even generate summaries — all autonomously. According to reports, it can also create Office-compatible files, including Excel sheets and PowerPoint presentations, without the need for Microsoft’s software at all.
A Disruption on the Horizon
These upgrades could spell disruption for a large chunk of the workforce. Clerical roles, especially those built around repetitive data entry or basic spreadsheet management, may become redundant as AI tools step in to do the job faster and more efficiently.
As noted by The Information and other tech outlets, new tools in development allow users to handle spreadsheet and presentation tasks entirely within ChatGPT’s interface — no Excel license required.
In a recent Business Standard piece, reporter Vasudha Mukherjee explained that these tools eliminate the need for Microsoft Office access altogether. That means ChatGPT could directly threaten one of Microsoft’s core products, even as both companies maintain close ties through Azure integrations.
The AI That Acts Like a Human User
What sets this version of ChatGPT apart is its ability to interact with software in a surprisingly human-like way. Over on GitHub, a user under the name Ameenha23 wrote:
“ChatGPT-4 demonstrates a deep understanding of how Excel operates. It’s not just about writing formulas anymore — it’s about automating entire workflows.”
They added that it’s particularly skilled at handling repetitive tasks like data entry, basic calculations, and report generation. It even offers interactive guidance, making it a valuable tool for users of all skill levels.
In short, it no longer needs to assist someone working in Excel. It is the one doing the work.
What Comes Next?
With September just around the corner, many in the tech industry believe we’re about to see this new wave of AI land in real-world workplaces — and quickly. For some, that means new opportunities and efficiency. For others, it’s an unsettling sign of further job automation.
Whether this leads to widespread job displacement or simply a shift toward more creative and strategic roles remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: tools like ChatGPT aren’t just transforming how we work — they’re redefining what kind of work humans will be doing at all.
As we head deeper into 2025, one can’t help but wonder — if AI can use spreadsheets as well as, or better than, we can… what’s next?
