In a move that’s set the internet buzzing, key developers behind Final Fantasy XVI have sparked fresh speculation about a possible Nintendo release — possibly for the much-anticipated Switch 2.
During a recent livestream, producer Naoki Yoshida (better known to fans as Yoshi-P) and creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro casually mentioned that Nintendo is “the only platform left to conquer” when discussing the game’s journey across different consoles. It was a brief comment — but for eagle-eyed fans, it was more than enough to light a fire.
The gaming community, especially Final Fantasy diehards, is already spinning theories. Many believe this might be an early nod toward a Switch 2 port of Final Fantasy XVI, which originally launched on PS5 and later made its way to PC and Xbox Series X|S. Notably, the Xbox version has reportedly struggled to find traction in terms of sales, according to Pure Xbox.
Before fans get too ahead of themselves, though, it’s worth noting that Square Enix already has its hands full. The studio is preparing to bring Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade to Switch 2 this winter — a move that’s already generating a lot of excitement. Meanwhile, the tactical RPG Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is also lined up for a September release.
Still, this isn’t the first time the idea of Final Fantasy on Nintendo platforms has surfaced. Yoshi-P has previously hinted that Final Fantasy XIV Online might eventually arrive on a Nintendo console — though, again, no official confirmation has followed.
So far, Square Enix has stayed quiet on the matter. There’s no formal announcement about Final Fantasy XVI or XIV heading to the Switch 2, but the hints are starting to stack up — and in gaming, where there’s smoke, there’s often a Chocobo hiding somewhere nearby.
