Water Supply Disruptions Expected in Several Karachi Areas as Major Line Repairs Begin

KARACHI:
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has started urgent repair work on a 48-inch water supply line at the city’s K-II Pumping Station, a move expected to temporarily affect water supply to several parts of the metropolis.

According to a statement from the KWSC spokesperson issued on Tuesday, the repair includes the replacement of a key valve along the pipeline. The maintenance teams are working in continuous 24-hour shifts, and the entire process is expected to take around 48 hours to complete.

As part of the ongoing maintenance, three out of 11 pumps at the North East Pumping Station have been temporarily shut down, while one pump at the Dhabeji Pumping Station has also been taken offline.

Because of these repairs, several neighborhoods including parts of Safura Town, North Nazimabad, and Gulberg Town will experience reduced or disrupted water supply. Certain areas in Liaquatabad Town and Gulshan-e-Iqbal are also expected to face intermittent shortages until the work is completed.

Currently, Karachi receives around 650 million gallons of water per day (MGD). During the repair phase, the city’s water supply will see a temporary shortfall of approximately 150 MGD, with the remaining 500 MGD continuing through unaffected lines.

KWSC has urged residents to store sufficient water and use it carefully during the maintenance period. The spokesperson also apologized for the inconvenience, assuring citizens that the repairs are essential to ensure a more reliable and efficient water supply system in the long run.
