Washington – US President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Tuesday that the war between Russia and Ukraine will eventually come to an end, though he admitted no one can predict exactly when that will happen.
Speaking to reporters at the White House after his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump said he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin also wanted the conflict to end. “There is a real opportunity to stop this war in Ukraine,” Trump remarked, adding that his ultimate goal was the prosperity of the Ukrainian people.
Trump hinted at the possibility of a trilateral meeting involving himself, Zelensky, and Putin if conditions improve. “We have already ended six wars — and that was no easy task. Today, seven key world leaders are here at the White House, and together we will work to ensure Ukraine’s security,” he said.
The US President stressed that both Kyiv and Moscow were seeking peace, while he himself wanted to see stability and trade flourish across the globe. “We are taking steps toward lasting peace. The aim is to achieve a settlement that will endure between the two countries,” he said.
Addressing Putin’s recent visit to the United States, Trump dismissed suggestions that it reflected weakness on Russia’s part. “His decision to come here was not easy. It was not about defeat. He doesn’t want a ceasefire that collapses in two years with the fighting starting all over again. People are dying we want to stop that,” he noted.
For his part, President Zelensky backed Trump’s diplomatic efforts, saying Ukraine fully supports a negotiated end to the war. “We stand behind the path of diplomacy that President Trump is leading,” Zelensky affirmed.
