Southend Airport Shut Down Indefinitely After Beech B200 Jet Crashes in Fireball

London: London Southend Airport has been closed indefinitely following a devastating crash involving a small private aircraft on Sunday afternoon. The plane, a Beechcraft King Air B200 operated by Dutch firm Zeusch Aviation, went down moments after takeoff, erupting into a massive fireball that sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

How the Incident Unfolded

The twin-turboprop aircraft crashed at approximately 3:48 PM local time, shortly after departing for Lelystad in the Netherlands. Emergency services, including Essex Police, multiple fire crews, and the East of England Ambulance Service, rushed to the scene within minutes. Authorities have suspended all flights to and from Southend Airport until further notice.

In an official statement shared on social media, Southend Airport confirmed:

“We can confirm there has been a serious incident at London Southend Airport involving a general aviation aircraft. We are working closely with the authorities to manage the situation.”

Aircraft Details and Flight History

The plane involved was a Beech B200 Super King Air, a 12-metre twin-engine turboprop widely used for private charters and medical evacuation missions. Configured with eight luxury leather seats, the aircraft was registered as PH-ZAZ under Zeusch Aviation. Flight-tracking data showed that the aircraft had flown between Lelystad, Memmingen (Germany), Athens (Greece), and Pula (Croatia) over the weekend before its London arrival.

Eyewitness John Johnson, who witnessed the takeoff while at the airport with his family, described the terrifying final moments to The Independent:

“We waved at the pilots and they waved back. The aircraft lined up for departure, then took off. Seconds later, it banked sharply left, inverted, and crashed nose-first into the ground.”

Emergency Response and Investigation

The crash immediately engulfed the plane in flames, prompting police to seal off the site and evacuate nearby areas as a safety precaution. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she is “closely monitoring the situation” in coordination with aviation authorities.

Essex Police, alongside investigators from the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), have launched an official probe into the incident. Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin described it as a “serious incident”, adding:

“It’s crucial we gather every detail to understand the cause. We’re working with all partners on scene.”

A heavy police presence and cordons are expected to remain in place through Monday as investigations continue. So far, no information has been released regarding casualties or survivors.

Flight Operations and Disruptions

All flights scheduled to depart or arrive at Southend Airport have been cancelled, impacting at least five international services on Sunday alone. Airport authorities have not confirmed when normal operations will resume.
