A regional passenger flight carrying dozens of people has gone missing in Russia’s remote Far East, triggering an urgent search and rescue operation.
The aircraft, an Antonov An-24 operated by Angara Airlines — a Siberia-based regional carrier — was en route to the town of Tynda, located in the Amur region, which borders northeastern China. According to early reports, air traffic control lost all contact with the plane as it neared its destination on Thursday.
Conflicting Numbers, Growing Concerns
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of people aboard, with initial figures varying. Vasily Orlov, the governor of the region, stated on Telegram that 43 passengers, including five children, and six crew members were on board. However, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry later suggested the number may be closer to 40 in total.
“All necessary forces and resources have been deployed to search for the aircraft,” Governor Orlov wrote.
The sudden loss of contact has sent shockwaves through the region, where rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and vast forests often complicate air travel — and rescue missions. No official word has yet been given on what may have caused the disappearance, nor has any wreckage been located at this time.
A Grim Wait for News
Search operations are now underway, involving local authorities, aviation officials, and emergency response teams. The area where the aircraft disappeared is known for its harsh, isolated landscape — a factor that may significantly delay both recovery and information.
Families of those on board have begun gathering at airports and government offices, anxiously awaiting any scrap of news.
Angara Airlines, which operates flights across Siberia and Russia’s Far East, has not yet issued a detailed statement. Founded in 2000, the airline has had a generally safe track record but, like many regional carriers in remote parts of Russia, operates older Soviet-era aircraft such as the An-24 — a model that first entered service in the 1960s.
A Nation Holding Its Breath
As night falls in the Far East, hope hangs in the balance. With no signal, no location data, and no confirmed sightings, the fate of the missing flight remains unknown. Russia’s aviation safety agencies are expected to release further updates as soon as new information becomes available.
For now, dozens of families — and a watchful world — wait.
