BUCHAREST — In a symbolic move reflecting over six decades of friendship and cooperation, Romania has decided to name a street in its coastal city of Constanța as “Karachi Avenue.” The gesture marks 61 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations and serves as a tribute to their growing partnership in trade, culture, and education.
The announcement came following a meeting between Romanian Ambassador Dr. Dan Stoenescu and Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, where both sides reaffirmed their shared vision of strengthening ties between the two port cities Karachi and Constanța known for their strategic maritime importance and economic vitality.
According to officials, Pakistan is also considering a reciprocal move by naming a street in Karachi “Constanța Avenue” to further promote friendship and mutual respect between the two countries. Such symbolic exchanges, they said, reflect the spirit of cooperation and the desire to build stronger people-to-people connections.
During the discussions, Ambassador Stoenescu also announced the reopening of Romania’s Honorary Consulate in Karachi, a step expected to enhance bilateral collaboration across business, cultural, and academic sectors. The consulate will play a key role in facilitating partnerships, supporting Romanian enterprises in Pakistan, and deepening engagement between both nations.
The decision comes as Pakistan and Romania continue to expand their collaboration in areas like energy, education, and diplomacy. Over the years, the two countries have maintained a cordial relationship grounded in respect, shared values, and a mutual commitment to progress.
Officials from both sides expressed confidence that the new initiatives from street naming to renewed diplomatic presence will pave the way for a closer, more dynamic partnership between Islamabad and Bucharest.
