Red Line BRT Faces Further Delay, May Take Two More Years: Sharjeel Memon

KARACHI: Senior Provincial Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has acknowledged that the completion of Karachi’s much-anticipated Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project could be delayed by another two years.

Speaking to reporters, Memon explained that while the finalization of the project may stretch into 2027, noticeable relief for commuters is expected within the next four to five months. According to him, work along University Road a key corridor of the project will see improvements by early next year.

He admitted that challenges in execution have slowed progress, citing inflation, fluctuating dollar rates, and the rising costs of steel and cement as major hurdles. Relocating essential utilities such as gas, water, and electricity lines through densely populated areas has further complicated construction efforts.

Memon was keen to clarify that the Sindh government should not shoulder full blame for the delay. “The caretaker administration did not lay a single brick during its nine months in office. We, however, are pursuing this project relentlessly, coordinating daily with contractors and relevant institutions,” he remarked.

He acknowledged the frustration of citizens but appealed for patience. “Yes, the delay has created difficulties, and we apologize to the people. But once complete, this project will be a landmark for Karachi. Every large-scale development comes with obstacles, and we are addressing them one by one.”

Memon further stressed that the government is keeping a close eye on expenditures to safeguard public funds. “The Red Line BRT will take more time to finish, but in the coming months, you will see significant relief. This is our promise,” he added.
