The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a fresh alert ahead of the 10th spell of monsoon rains, warning of heavy downpours and thunderstorms across large parts of the province over the next three days.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, strong monsoon showers are forecast from September 7 to 9 in major districts, including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Gujrat, and Sialkot. Similar conditions are expected in Narowal, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Okara, Sahiwal, Kasur, Jhang, Sargodha, and Mianwali, while southern Punjab districts such as Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, and Rajanpur are also likely to be affected.
The PDMA warned of a potential risk of flash flooding in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan between September 8 and 9.
Relief Commissioner Punjab, Nabeel Javed, has instructed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain on high alert under the directives of the Chief Minister. He cautioned that monsoon rains have already triggered serious flooding in rivers and adjoining streams, with the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej witnessing elevated water levels. Urban nullahs in major cities could also overflow, worsening the situation.
“All deputy commissioners and relevant officers must stay in the field,” Javed directed, adding that health, irrigation, communication and works, local government, and livestock departments have been put on standby to deal with possible emergencies.
The Relief Commissioner urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and refrain from recreational activities near rivers or streams during the rainy spell. “People must stay indoors during thunderstorms and keep themselves safe,” he emphasized.
In case of emergencies, the public has been advised to contact the PDMA helpline 1129 for assistance.
