Pakistan Seeks to Delay LNG Deliveries from Qatar Amid Falling Demand

ISLAMABAD (August 26, 2025): Pakistan has decided to seek a postponement in the delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported from Qatar, as demand from the power and industrial sectors continues to decline.

According to sources in the Petroleum Division, a delegation headed by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik is expected to visit Doha soon to formally request the deferral of scheduled shipments. Pakistan is likely to propose a delay of 177 cargoes over the next five years, which would also result in the expiry of one long-term contract. Officials added that Islamabad may additionally look to sell at least two LNG cargoes on the global market starting January 2026.

The sources noted that the final decision will rest with Qatar, which will evaluate whether the postponement is feasible. In the meantime, Pakistan is also grappling with reduced domestic gas production, further complicating supply management.

Energy insiders explained that the power sector is currently consuming around 300 mmcfd less gas than its allocated quota, while the export-oriented industries are also drawing below their prescribed levels. This shortfall in offtake has created a “line pack” problem, where surplus gas remains in the system due to lower demand.

Officials say the move is aimed at easing financial pressure on the government, which has been struggling to manage energy payments amid fluctuating consumption patterns.
