KARACHI — In another blow to inflation-hit households, the price of milk in Karachi is expected to increase by Rs 50 per liter, as dairy farmers have warned of protests if their demands are not met by October 1.
Speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, representatives of the Dairy Farmers Association said the devastating floods had severely impacted the dairy sector, pushing up production costs by nearly 30 percent. They argued that selling milk at the current rate of Rs 220 per liter was unsustainable and had left farmers facing heavy financial losses.
Karachi, home to more than one million cows and buffaloes, produces around five million liters of milk daily. But with costs mounting, farmers claim they are collectively losing about Rs 3 billion every day.
“The current situation is unbearable,” association leaders said. “If the price is not increased to Rs 270 per liter, we will no longer be able to feed or care for our animals, which could lead to large-scale starvation and deaths among livestock.”
The farmers warned that unless the Sindh government approved the new rates immediately, they would launch protests outside the Chief Minister’s House.
This looming hike in milk prices adds yet another burden for Karachi residents already struggling with record-high inflation, raising concerns about the affordability of basic necessities in the months ahead.
