KARACHI – Mayor Murtaza Wahab has voiced strong concerns over the prolonged delays in the city’s Green and Red Line transit projects, warning that unresolved issues are causing daily hardship for residents.
Speaking on the matter, Wahab demanded that the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL) provide a firm completion timeline for both projects. He stressed that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) must also be assured of realistic deadlines before the city’s worsening problems spiral further out of control.
“The NOC issued in 2017 still hasn’t been executed properly, and citizens continue to suffer,” Wahab said, sharply criticizing the slow pace of development. He further warned that, at the current rate, the projects may not be finished even by 2035.
Highlighting the lack of coordination, the Mayor urged that local leadership be directly involved to avoid repeating past mistakes. He pointed out persistent troubles caused by bottlenecks at the Serpentine and KDA Chowrangi on the Green Line, adding that University Road has now become a major source of frustration for commuters due to the Red Line construction.
In a recent move, the KMC halted construction activity by contractors working on the Green Line Extension along MA Jinnah Road. A formal letter has also been sent to PIDCL authorities, pressing for clarity on project timelines and accountability.
