KARACHI — The city’s business community has raised serious alarms over the prolonged electricity outages in Karachi, describing the situation as a “catastrophe” for industry and trade. Atiq Mir, chairman of the All Karachi Traders Alliance, called on the government to take immediate action to restore power and stabilize the energy sector.
Speaking to the press, Mir highlighted that the once-vibrant “City of Lights” is now crippled by darkness, with frequent load-shedding severely impacting daily business operations. He noted that disputes between K-Electric and widespread electricity theft have translated into soaring bills, unfair taxes, and an unsustainable burden on regular consumers.
“Low-income households are struggling to pay their electricity bills, while illegal connections continue to rise. The government must urgently regulate power tariffs to prevent further economic damage,” Mir stated. He also recalled that before the elections, citizens received 200–300 units of free electricity, a relief now gone despite skyrocketing costs.
Prolonged outages, he warned, are slowing markets, forcing businesses to shut down, and threatening Karachi’s and Pakistan’s economic stability.
