Karachi Gears Up for Transport Overhaul as Double-Decker and EV Buses Hit the Streets Next Week

KARACHI – Karachi’s public transport system is on the cusp of a major transformation, as the Sindh government prepares to introduce new double-decker buses and electric vehicles (EV) buses across the city starting next week.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, speaking after a briefing from transport department officials and BRT project teams, said the new fleet will provide commuters with safer, cleaner, and more reliable travel options. “We are launching the double-decker route for Karachi’s public and also starting new EV bus routes,” Memon said, offering hope to residents who have long struggled with congested and inconsistent transport.

The provincial government also plans to roll out an EV taxi service by December, aimed at providing affordable intra-city travel. Officials said the People’s Bus Service network will expand further with an additional 500 buses during the current financial year.

New bus routes are expected to begin in other districts soon, improving connectivity in areas that have historically suffered from limited transport options. Authorities were instructed to expedite operational preparations and remove any delays that could hinder the launch.

Women commuters are also set to benefit, with scooter-riding training centers being established at all divisional headquarters under the Pink Scooty Scheme, promoting mobility and independence for female students and residents.

Regarding BRT projects, Memon said work on the Yellow Line is ongoing around the clock and urged authorities to accelerate construction and complete depot facilities promptly. He also announced that the second section of the Taj Haider Flyover would soon reopen to two-way traffic, easing congestion in the area.

The city’s residents can expect a visibly improved commuting experience in the coming weeks, with a combination of modern buses, electric vehicles, and upgraded infrastructure reshaping Karachi’s public transport landscape.
