Karachi Braces for Water Shortage as Dhabeji Power Shutdown Looms

Karachi – August 4, 2025:
Residents of Karachi are likely to experience yet another spell of water scarcity today, as scheduled maintenance work by K-Electric at the Dhabeji Grid and Substation is expected to disrupt power supply to major pumping stations — directly impacting the city’s water distribution system.

According to a statement issued by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), electricity at the Dhabeji pumping station will be partially suspended from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, resulting in a potential shortfall of around 100 million gallons of water during this nine-hour window.

The KWSC spokesperson warned that several areas — including Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal Colony, Bin Qasim, Defence Housing Authority (DHA), and North Nazimabad — are likely to face reduced water pressure or complete outages.

This is not the first time Karachi’s water infrastructure has taken a hit due to power-related disruptions. Just last week, on July 29, similar maintenance at Dhabeji led to a deficit of approximately 85 million gallons. Earlier this week, a technical fault at the Hub Pumping Station also disrupted the Hub Rising Main No. 2 line, further compounding the city’s ongoing water woes.

While the current situation is expected to strain the already fragile water supply network, there is some hope on the horizon. The much-anticipated Hub Canal Project — set to be inaugurated on August 14 — promises to inject an additional 100 million gallons of water per day into Karachi’s supply lines.

Speaking to the media, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirmed that the Rs12.8 billion infrastructure project is nearing completion. “This will significantly ease the burden on our current system and help meet the growing demand of the city,” he said.

K-Electric, meanwhile, maintains that the maintenance work is part of its long-term strategy to ensure uninterrupted and improved power services. However, officials at KWSC have urged citizens to store water in advance and use it wisely throughout the day to minimize the impact of the temporary shutdown.

As the city prepares for the shutdown, many residents are once again left wondering when Karachi’s essential services will finally be able to operate without such frequent interruptions.
