Karachi (September 24, 2025): K-Electric (KE) has officially announced the permanent closure of two of its gas-fired power stations, citing ongoing gas supply challenges.
In a letter addressed to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, KE confirmed that the Korangi Town Gas Turbine Power Station and the Site Gas Turbine Power Station will be permanently decommissioned. The company stated that the decision has been approved by its board of directors, and KE will now seek formal approval from NEPRA for the permanent shutdown of both plants.
The letter highlighted that KE’s attempt to manage electricity generation through limited local gas supply and reliance on imported LNG did not succeed. However, the company reassured that the closure of these plants will not disrupt electricity transmission across the network.
To offset the reduction in capacity, KE has activated the 900-megawatt Bin Qasim Power Plant and signed an agreement to procure an additional 2,000 megawatts from the National Grid, ensuring continued electricity supply to meet consumer demand.
This move comes as the utility continues to navigate Pakistan’s broader energy challenges, balancing generation constraints with the need to maintain reliable power for Karachi’s residents and industries.
