Is Islamabad Set to Become Pakistan’s First Cashless City? Digital Payments Expand to Hotels, Petrol Pumps, and Restaurants

Islamabad is moving a step closer to becoming Pakistan’s first fully cashless city, as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) rolls out digital payment options across a much wider range of businesses. The initiative, which previously covered weekly markets, metro buses, and select government services, will now include hotels, restaurants, petrol pumps, and guest houses throughout the capital.

With this expansion, residents and visitors will be able to pay for meals, fuel, and hotel bookings directly through their mobile phones—reducing the need to carry cash and making everyday transactions smoother and more secure.

Banks operating in Islamabad have also begun awareness drives to help people understand how to use mobile apps and QR codes for payments. Many shopkeepers and service providers have joined the effort, with some offering small incentives to encourage customers to switch to digital payments.

Officials say the shift will not only save people from the hassle and risk of carrying cash but will also promote transparency and efficiency for businesses. Digital payments, they claim, can help shops maintain better financial records and build greater trust with customers.

For consumers, the move promises faster checkouts, easier budget management, and more convenience overall. For businesses, it offers safer transactions and improved bookkeeping.

Islamabad’s push toward becoming a cashless city aligns with international trends, reflecting Pakistan’s broader move toward digitization and modern financial systems. If the initiative continues successfully, the capital could soon set a benchmark for other cities in the country, showcasing a more streamlined and technology-driven urban experience.
