Iranian President Pezeshkian to Arrive in Pakistan on Saturday for High-Stakes Visit

ISLAMABAD – July 31, 2025

In a significant diplomatic development, Iranian President Dr. Massoud Pezeshkian will arrive in Pakistan on Saturday for a high-level visit that comes against the backdrop of the recent Iran-Israel conflict and broader regional tensions.

The visit is being seen as a key moment in strengthening Pakistan-Iran relations and follows an invitation extended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Officials have confirmed that President Pezeshkian will land in Lahore, where he is scheduled to pay tribute at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal, the national poet and philosopher. From there, he will travel to Islamabad for a packed agenda of meetings.

During his stay, the Iranian leader is expected to hold detailed discussions with Pakistan’s top leadership, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir. Talks will also include interactions with leading cultural and business figures in Pakistan.

The focus of the visit, according to both Pakistani and Iranian officials, will be on reinforcing ties across multiple fronts — political, economic, religious, and cultural. A major objective will be expanding bilateral trade, which currently stands at around $3 billion, and exploring new avenues for cross-border and provincial-level cooperation.

However, sources indicate that the regional security landscape will dominate the agenda. Recent escalations in the Middle East, especially the Iran-Israel confrontation, as well as ongoing instability in Gaza and recent tensions in South Asia, are expected to feature prominently in discussions.

The visit also carries symbolic weight. In the aftermath of the brief but intense Pakistan-India conflict earlier this year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with the Army Chief, traveled to Tehran to personally thank Iranian leadership for their diplomatic support during the crisis. Iran played a behind-the-scenes mediating role, with its foreign minister engaging both New Delhi and Islamabad in shuttle diplomacy to prevent further escalation.

President Pezeshkian himself reached out to both Pakistani and Indian leaders in an effort to stabilize the situation. The goodwill was reciprocated weeks later, when Iran came under attack by Israeli missiles and drones. Pakistan swiftly and unequivocally condemned the Israeli aggression and expressed solidarity with Tehran, also using its platform at the United Nations Security Council — where it currently holds a non-permanent seat — to advocate in Iran’s favor.

President Pezeshkian’s upcoming visit is widely regarded as a continuation of that growing strategic partnership, one that is becoming increasingly important amid shifting regional dynamics.
