KARACHI (October 8, 2025) — Inspector General of Sindh Police, Ghulam Nabi Memon, has expressed serious concern over the growing number of extortion incidents across Karachi, assuring that decisive action is being taken to curb the menace and restore confidence among the city’s business community.
According to an official report submitted to the IG by AIG Operations, a total of 118 extortion cases have been reported in Karachi so far this year. The report provides a detailed breakdown, revealing that 44 of these cases were formally investigated, while 74 complaints were later found to be linked with business or personal financial disputes rather than organized extortion. Out of the 44 registered cases, 39 have already been resolved, the report added.
A police spokesperson stated that 78 suspects were identified during the investigations, of whom 43 have been arrested and five were killed in separate police encounters. Within the past ten days alone, police reportedly neutralized four extortionists in armed exchanges. The report also mentioned 34 kidnapping cases, which led to the arrest of 46 suspects, while two were killed during operations.
In response to the findings, IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon reaffirmed that the provincial police remain committed to improving law and order and maintaining a secure business climate in Karachi. He emphasized that “law enforcement agencies have previously taken strict action against elements attempting to destabilize the economy, and such operations will continue without discrimination.”
The IG further stressed that the police are actively monitoring areas where criminal networks have tried to re-emerge, ensuring that no leniency will be shown to those involved in extortion, kidnapping, or intimidation of traders.
Memon’s remarks come at a time when Karachi’s business community has repeatedly voiced concerns over renewed extortion threats. Police officials say ongoing intelligence-based operations aim to dismantle the networks behind these crimes and bring lasting stability to Pakistan’s commercial hub.
