Hub Dam Reaches Full Capacity After Heavy Rains, Evacuation Alert Issued

Quetta: The Irrigation Department has confirmed that the Hub Dam, a key source of water supply for Karachi, has reached full capacity following days of heavy rainfall.

Officials said the water level in the reservoir has climbed to 338 feet, leaving just one foot of storage before the dam overflows. Authorities have warned that discharge from the spillway could begin at any time.

In anticipation, residents living along the Hub River have been advised to move to safer areas. Owners of stone-crushing plants have also been directed to evacuate their machinery and workers immediately.

According to WAPDA officials, the maximum storage capacity of the dam is 338 feet, and with the reservoir now nearly brimming, precautionary measures are being enforced. Teams from the Ministry of Water Resources, WAPDA, and the Lasbela district administration are closely monitoring the situation and overseeing controlled releases through the spillway to maintain the dam’s safety.

The Hub Dam, located on the border of Sindh and Balochistan, plays a critical role in supplying water to Karachi. Its filling is seen as a relief for the city, which has long faced water shortages, though it also raises concerns of flooding in nearby low-lying areas.
