ISLAMABAD – July 29, 2025:
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, on Monday reiterated the government’s continued commitment to pursuing diplomatic and legal avenues in the case of Dr Aafia Siddiqui. Speaking to reporters after a book launch event at the National Language Promotion Department in Islamabad, Tarar addressed recent media coverage and clarified the government’s position.
He said that the remarks made by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar regarding Dr Siddiqui had been taken out of context, and emphasized that the government remains fully engaged in efforts for her release. “We have been providing consistent diplomatic and legal support for Dr Aafia’s case, and our commitment has never wavered,” Tarar stated.
The minister further disclosed that a high-level committee, led by the Federal Law Minister, has been established to expedite progress in the matter. He described the current administration’s efforts as “unprecedented” compared to those of previous governments.
In a separate clarification, Tarar addressed rumors linking Ishaq Dar to the Sugar Advisory Board, stating that the Deputy Prime Minister holds no such position. He urged media outlets to exercise responsibility and verify information before airing unconfirmed reports.
Turning to the topic of cryptocurrency, the minister noted that Pakistan has made significant progress in developing a regulatory framework. He confirmed the establishment of a “Crypto Council” and the initiation of legislative work aimed at overseeing digital currency activities in the country.
Tarar also took aim at former finance minister Miftah Ismail, criticizing his recent statements on cryptocurrency regulation. He suggested that Ismail’s stance closely mirrors India’s narrative and does not reflect the realities on the ground in Pakistan.
“The digital economy is evolving rapidly, and Pakistan must position itself with a clear, forward-looking policy,” Tarar concluded.
