Federal Government Approves Rs 250 Million Grant for Pakistan Hockey Team’s Pro League Participation

Islamabad, August 25, 2025 – The federal government has stepped in to rescue Pakistan hockey by approving a grant of Rs 250 million, paving the way for the national team’s participation in the upcoming Pro Hockey League.

With the International Hockey Federation’s deadline set to expire today, the matter was taken up in detail during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination.

Secretary IPC Mohiuddin Wani informed the committee that Pakistan required a total of Rs 350 million to confirm its place in the league. While the federal government has sanctioned Rs 250 million, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has been tasked with arranging the remaining Rs 100 million.

During the proceedings, committee members Shehla Raza and Mehreen Razak Bhutto voiced concerns over the PHF’s internal affairs and performance. Raza criticized the appointment of the PHF Secretary General, terming it unconstitutional, and pointed out that Pakistan had not secured qualification on merit but rather gained entry after New Zealand’s withdrawal.

Responding to the criticism, PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid stressed the importance of Pakistan’s participation, calling the Pro League one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport, featuring the world’s top ten teams. He maintained that Pakistan’s presence was essential for the revival of hockey in the country.

The decision has brought a sense of relief to hockey fans who feared Pakistan might miss out on another international opportunity due to financial constraints.
