Death Toll in Quetta Suicide Bombing Rises to 15

The death toll from Tuesday night’s suicide bombing near Shahwani Stadium in Quetta rose to 15 on Wednesday. The attack targeted people leaving a Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal) rally marking the death anniversary of Sardar Attaullah Mengal.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat said 32 others were injured. The explosion took place 500 metres from the rally exit point in a dimly lit area near a graveyard.

Strict security, including 120 police officers, prevented the attacker from reaching the main crowd. The bomber detonated 8 kg of explosives before reaching the gathering. His remains, believed to be under 30 years old, were recovered.

The banned militant group Islamic State claimed responsibility.

The provincial government announced Rs1.5 million compensation for families of the deceased, Rs0.5 million for each injured person, and Rs200,000 for minor victims. Section 144 has been imposed across Balochistan until September 15, banning large gatherings after dark.
