ISLAMABAD – August 21: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi landed in Islamabad on Wednesday for a three-day official visit, marking another important step in strengthening Pakistan–China ties. He arrived at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Dar personally received his Chinese counterpart at Nur Khan Airbase, where senior officials from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy were also present. A group of children dressed in traditional attire presented flowers to welcome the visiting dignitary.
During his stay, Wang Yi will co-chair the Sixth Pakistan–China Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue with Dar in Islamabad. According to diplomatic sources, the high-level talks will cover a wide range of subjects, including political engagement, economic cooperation, and regional security.
The visit also comes in the lead-up to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s scheduled trip to Beijing later this month, where he will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and hold a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping.
Yi’s stop in Islamabad follows his earlier participation in the Sixth Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue in Kabul, where he met with Dar and Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. In that meeting, Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan agreed to expand regional cooperation, with a landmark decision to extend the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan.
Officials from all three countries emphasized that the CPEC extension would improve trade and transit links for Afghanistan, connecting it more closely to regional markets and paving the way for greater development opportunities. In their joint statement, they also vowed to intensify cooperation against terrorism and drug trafficking, highlighting the need for collective security measures to ensure stability.
The ministers further agreed to collaborate in health, education, cultural exchanges, and broader connectivity projects, underscoring a shared vision of peace, development, and prosperity for the region.
