China and UN Express Condolences Over Flood Devastation in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD/NEW YORK – August 19, 2025:
China has voiced deep sorrow over the widespread destruction and heavy loss of life caused by recent floods in Pakistan, reaffirming its solidarity with the country during this time of crisis.

According to international media reports, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it extends heartfelt sympathy to the families who lost loved ones and to those injured in the disaster. The ministry expressed confidence that Pakistan will soon overcome the tragedy and move towards recovery.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also conveyed his condolences directly to his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar. A spokesperson for the ministry added that the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan is closely monitoring the situation of Chinese nationals in the country. So far, no casualties or injuries among Chinese citizens have been reported.

Meanwhile, the scale of the devastation continues to rise. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed that since June 26, at least 657 people have died in rain-related incidents, landslides, and flash floods across Pakistan.

The United Nations has also expressed grief over the humanitarian toll. Secretary-General António Guterres, in a statement issued from New York, said he was “deeply saddened” by the tragic loss of lives and widespread destruction. Offering his condolences to the affected families, he reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in relief and recovery efforts.

According to reports, at least 328 deaths have been recorded in the latest wave of torrential rains and flash floods, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province among the hardest-hit regions. In Buner district, cloudbursts triggered massive water flows from the mountains, sweeping through homes and leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Both China and the United Nations emphasized that they stand firmly with Pakistan as the country grapples with one of the deadliest monsoon disasters in recent years.
