A building at Saddar’s electronics bazaar catches fire.

KARACHI: A big fire started in a building used for both homes and businesses in Saddar’s electronics market on Monday, according to police and rescue teams.

Firefighters got the flames under control after hours of hard work with more than six fire trucks. No one got hurt or died in the incident.

Hassaan Ul Haseeb speaking for Rescue-1122, told Dawn the fire began on the mezzanine floor around 12:30pm. He said the mezzanine and ground floors had shops and storage areas for cell phones solar batteries, laptops, and high-voltage wires, while people lived on the upper floors.

He said the fire spread from the shops to the third floor. Thick smoke made it tough for firefighters to work, and the building lacked a fire safety system with one way in and out, he said.

He added that six fire trucks, one tall ladder truck, and two water tankers helped control the fire by evening, but crews kept working to cool down hot spots late into the night.
