ISLAMABAD
The nation is observing today (Thursday) the 74th death anniversary of Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan, Pakistan’s first Prime Minister and one of the key architects of the country’s independence movement.

Liaquat Ali Khan, a close associate and trusted aide of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, played a vital role in the struggle for a separate homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent. Following the creation of Pakistan in 1947, he took charge as the nation’s first Prime Minister, leading the country through its formative years with dedication and vision.

Born in Karnal, East Punjab, Liaquat Ali Khan received his early education at Aligarh Muslim University before pursuing higher studies at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Known for his intellect and integrity, he emerged as a strong proponent of Islamic democracy and parliamentary politics in pre-partition India.

Although initially invited to join the Indian National Congress, Liaquat Ali Khan instead aligned himself with the All-India Muslim League under Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s leadership a decision that would shape the course of history. Together, they campaigned tirelessly for the rights of Indian Muslims, working toward the realization of Pakistan.

Before independence, Liaquat served as the first Finance Minister in the interim government of British India, where his “Poor Man’s Budget” earned widespread praise for its emphasis on social justice and equitable distribution of resources.

Tragically, Liaquat Ali Khan’s life was cut short when he was assassinated on October 16, 1951, while addressing a public gathering at Company Bagh in Rawalpindi a place later renamed Liaquat Bagh in his memory.

Remembered as “Quaid-e-Millat” (Leader of the Nation) and “Shaheed-e-Millat” (Martyr of the Nation), Liaquat Ali Khan’s legacy continues to inspire generations. His contributions to Pakistan’s political foundation, his steadfast leadership, and his unwavering commitment to national unity remain an enduring chapter in the country’s history.
