FBR Extends Income Tax Return Deadline Once Again, Now Until October 31

ISLAMABAD
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has once again extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for the tax year 2025, pushing it from October 15 to October 31, 2025, according to an official notification issued on Wednesday.

The notification stated that the decision was taken in response to multiple requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations across the country. The extension has been granted under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, which allows the FBR to provide such relief when deemed necessary.

“The Federal Board of Revenue is pleased to communicate that the date of filing of Income Tax Return for Tax Year 2025, for persons who were required to file their returns by September 30, 2025, and was extended up to October 15, 2025, is further extended to October 31, 2025, in view of the requests from various trade bodies and tax bar associations,” the notification read.

This marks the second extension granted by the FBR this year, despite earlier assurances that no further delays would be permitted. The move suggests the tax authority has once again bowed to pressure from influential sectors and professional groups urging more time for compliance.

The original deadline for filing returns was September 30, but just as the clock struck midnight that day, the FBR extended it to October 15 following a surge of last-minute appeals from taxpayers and business organizations.

While the FBR’s latest decision offers temporary relief to filers struggling with documentation and portal access issues, critics argue that repeated extensions undermine the government’s efforts to enforce fiscal discipline and expand the tax base.

For now, taxpayers have two additional weeks to submit their returns but whether the October 31 deadline will finally be the last remains to be seen.
