6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Western Turkey, Dozens Injured but No Fatalities Reported

A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck western Turkey on October 28, 2025, triggering widespread panic and sending tremors through several major cities.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake’s epicenter was located in Sindirgi, a town in Balikesir province, at a shallow depth of just under six kilometers making its impact more strongly felt at the surface.

The tremors rattled buildings across Istanbul, Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir, prompting thousands of residents to flee their homes and gather in open spaces. Authorities confirmed that three previously weakened structures and a two-story commercial building collapsed during the quake. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported, though at least 22 people sustained injuries, most of them due to panic or while rushing to escape.

Emergency response teams and rescue units were immediately dispatched to the affected areas, while local authorities opened mosques, schools, and sports complexes to offer temporary shelter to displaced residents. As aftershocks continued through the night, many people chose to remain outdoors rather than risk returning to damaged buildings.

This marks the second major tremor to hit Sindirgi in recent months a similar 6.1-magnitude earthquake had shaken the same region in August, heightening concerns about its growing seismic vulnerability. Experts have since urged residents to stay alert and follow safety measures, warning that additional aftershocks remain possible in the days ahead.

In a show of solidarity, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar extended heartfelt condolences to the Turkish government and its people, expressing Pakistan’s readiness to assist in relief and rehabilitation efforts. He reaffirmed the deep and longstanding friendship between the two nations.

Turkish officials are currently assessing the full extent of the damage, assuring that all affected communities will receive immediate support and aid as the country once again rallies to recover from nature’s fury.
