ISLAMABAD — The federal government has ordered the suspension of 3G and 4G mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi following the announcement of a protest march by a religious organization.
According to official sources, the Ministry of Interior has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to implement the suspension, which will come into effect tonight and remain in place until further notice, depending on the evolving security situation.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi approved the decision after consultations with law enforcement agencies, citing concerns over potential misuse of digital platforms and the need to maintain public order during the upcoming demonstrations.
The PTA has been instructed to coordinate closely with the Chief Commissioners and Inspectors General of both cities to ensure a smooth and secure implementation of the directive. Authorities have also been asked to maintain constant communication with security agencies to respond swiftly to any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, containers have been placed at key entry and exit points across Islamabad and Rawalpindi as part of enhanced security measures. Several major highways and connecting routes are expected to face partial or complete closures, with traffic diversions being arranged to manage public movement.
Officials say the move is a precautionary measure aimed at preventing unrest and ensuring peace during the protest. Residents of the twin cities are advised to plan their travel accordingly and stay updated through official announcements.
