What Will Be the Price of Flour? Major Development Announced Amid Wheat Shortage Fears

KARACHI — Amid growing concerns over a possible wheat shortage and the destruction of major crops following the recent floods, the Sindh government has announced a new wheat release policy a move that is expected to directly impact flour prices across the province.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Sindh Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, where the Wheat Production Policy 2025–26 was approved along with several other key policy measures.

During the briefing, the Sindh Food Department informed the cabinet that 1.265 million metric tons of wheat would be released to flour mills. Each 100-kilogram wheat sack will be provided to the mills at a controlled rate of Rs. 9,500, a measure aimed at stabilizing flour prices in local markets.

Chief Minister Shah directed authorities to ensure that the benefits of the policy are passed on directly to the public, warning that hoarding or artificial price hikes would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The meeting also approved the reconstitution of the Sindh Enterprise Development Fund (SEDF) Board of Directors, with its chairperson to be a minister, advisor, or special assistant. Independent members were also appointed to strengthen the board’s governance and transparency.

In another major decision, the cabinet approved the reconstitution of the Sindh Senior Citizens Council for a third term. The council will propose new initiatives and welfare measures to improve the quality of life for senior citizens across the province.

Additionally, the cabinet gave approval for the permanent appointment of 78 employees working under the Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) project.

Officials further briefed the cabinet that Pakistan Steel Mills had expressed willingness to hand over its educational institutions to the Sindh government for a period of 10 years. Under this arrangement, administrative control of the Aghosh Special Children Higher Secondary School has been transferred to the provincial government. To support the institution, the cabinet approved a budget of Rs. 53.4 million to cover its operational expenses.

The decisions mark an important step by the Sindh government toward ensuring food security, improving governance, and enhancing social welfare amid ongoing economic and agricultural challenges.
