KARACHI — August 1, 2025:
What began as an ordinary evening along Karachi’s Do Darya coastline turned into a nightmare on Thursday when a man reportedly threw two young children into the sea before jumping in after them. Eyewitnesses and rescue officials now fear that all three—one man, a boy, and a girl—have drowned.
The incident took place just before sunset, as onlookers watched in horror. According to multiple witnesses, the man—believed to be under the influence of drugs—first hurled one child into the choppy waters and then followed with the second in his arms, leaping in himself moments later.
Locals at the scene scrambled to help. Some threw wooden poles into the water in a desperate attempt to reach the children, while others shouted to nearby fishermen for assistance. But within seconds, all three had disappeared beneath the waves.
“I saw the children holding hands… one of them tried to run, but he couldn’t,” said Ahmed Ali, a bystander who witnessed the tragedy unfold. “It felt like the world stood still. Humanity failed in front of my eyes.”
Police and emergency services arrived shortly after being alerted by a caller, identified as Rana Safdar, who reported seeing bodies floating in the sea. Assistant Sub-Inspector Raza Butt confirmed the account and said authorities are working to identify the individuals involved.
Rescue teams from the Edhi Foundation scoured the coastline and deeper waters late into the night, but no signs of the man or the children were found. Due to poor visibility and darkness, the operation was called off and will resume early Friday morning.
While the motive behind the horrific act remains unclear, the incident has sparked outrage and sorrow across the city. Many have questioned the adequacy and speed of emergency response, especially at popular public spots like Sea View.
As Karachi sleeps, rescue divers prepare to return to the sea at dawn—holding on to hope, but fearing the worst. The city, meanwhile, mourns what appears to be the heartbreaking loss of two innocent young lives.
